**Please note new location!** If you have an interest in living in an intentional community, one filled with like-minded private homeowners that share and care for each other, then Co-housing may be for you. Each attached or single-family home has traditional amenities, including a private kitchen. Shared spaces typically feature a common house, which may include a large kitchen and dining area, laundry, and recreation rooms. Shared outdoor space typically contains parking, walkways, open space, and gardens. Neighbors also share resources such as tools and lawnmowers.
Households have independent incomes and private lives, but neighbors collaboratively plan and manage community activities and mutual areas. The legal structure is typically an HOA, Condo Association, or Housing Cooperative. Community activities feature regularly scheduled shared meals, meetings, and workdays. Neighbors gather for parties, games, movies, or other events. Co-housing makes it easy to form clubs, organize child and elder care, and carpool.
During our presentation, we will hear an introduction to co-housing and the process of creating a co-housing installation in Texas. Then we will learn about the Elgin Agrarian Cooperative and the Oasis Meditation Ecovillage, which are co-housing-like communities currently underway near Austin.
This will be a presentation by a panel of local experts: Howie Richey, Clifford May, Peter Fleury, and Jonathan Batista.
