During this hands-on workshop you will be introduced to the various steps of carpentry through discussion and hands on participation, including:
~ Selecting and obtaining reclaimed materials
~ Layout and design elements of stud framing
~ Tool basics
~ Building headers
~ Inserting doors and windows
~ Attaching roofs
The project: Construction of a 12×16 shed to introduce layout, some standard practices, and the ways different materials are used. The goal of the workshop is to show participants how to design and build a basic structure. With some practice, the same knowledge can be applied to more complicated structures, such as building a house.
The instructor: Norm Ballinger is a builder and designer of residential homes, especially strawbale, and also does rainwater harvesting. He has 30 years of construction experience.
Registration: Fee for the workshop is $75 for non-members and $60 for DBL members. (If you are not already a member, join now and receive the discounted workshop price.) Included as part of the workshop will be a healthy vegetarian lunch, water, tea and snacks. Enrollment is limited to fifteen people.
